About Nokian

The story of Nokian Footwear began in 1898 with a simple but ambitious idea: to create high-quality rubber boots built specifically for the harsh realities of northern conditions. More than a century later, that same path guides us today. Our mission is to give people the freedom to enjoy the outdoors in any weather, without compromise.

Each pair of Nokian boots brings together generations of craftsmanship and the clean, purposeful lines of Finnish design. But what truly sets them apart is the unmatched experience we’ve gained from enduring Nordic weather—ensuring every boot delivers the durability, comfort, and usability you can rely on.

In North America, Revolution Supply is proud to be the official seller of Nokian Footwear, making this legacy of Finnish quality available to outdoor enthusiasts across the continent.

Crafted for the North, Since 1898

At the close of the 19th century, Finland’s weather was as unforgiving as it is today: cold, wet, and unpredictable. To meet the challenge, a group of entrepreneurs founded Suomen Gummitehdas Oy (Finnish Rubber Works Ltd) in Helsinki with a vision to create durable rubber footwear built for northern conditions. Their boots quickly won the hearts of Finns, and production later moved to the town of Nokia. Soon, the simple name Nokia became synonymous with trusted quality.

From Everyday Wear to Icons

As Finland grew more industrial and international, demand shifted toward leisure and specialty footwear. In the 1960s, the bold and colorful Hai boot was designed for sailing, becoming a beloved staple of Finnish life. Then in 1973 came the Kontio — a full-length men’s rubber boot that became the benchmark of Finnish bootmaking, widely regarded as the king of rubber boots.

Shifts and Specialization

Over the decades, the product range expanded well beyond traditional boots — even into ski, bowling, and disco shoes. But as cheaper imports flooded the market in the 1990s, the company returned to its core strength: high-quality rubber boots. Nokian Tyres became its own company in 1988, and in 1990 Nokian Footwear Ltd was officially established. Meanwhile, the Nokia parent brand turned its focus to telecommunications, becoming a global leader.

Tradition Meets Global Craft

By the early 2000s, making boots in Finland was no longer sustainable. Production shifted to ISO-certified factories in Serbia and Slovakia, with entire Finnish assembly lines relocated to preserve quality and technique. Since 2007, all Nokian boots have been handmade by skilled European partners, using Finnish lasts and in close collaboration with our R&D team. The design, development, and recipes remain firmly rooted in Finland, ensuring every pair carries over a century of Nordic expertise.

A Finnish Brand, A Global Citizen

In 2005, Nokian Footwear found a new home with Berner Ltd, a family-owned Finnish company. To this day, design, product development, and sales remain in Finnish hands, while manufacturing is carried out by trusted international partners. This seamless blend of local innovation and global craftsmanship has resulted in boots that are at once functional, stylish, and built to last.

Today, Nokian Footwear exports to 15 countries worldwide — from professional-grade boots and children’s wear to urban lifestyle collections — all carrying the unmistakable spirit of Finnish design and durability.
